Viton Gaskets

Viton® Gaskets – Viton® fluoroelastomer was created to meet the needs of the aerospace industry in 1957. Viton® was introduced as a high-performance seal elastomer. Since its first appearance, Viton® fluoroelastomer usefulness has stretched across several industries such as automotive, fluid power, appliance, and chemical fields. The excellent performance of Viton® fluoroelastomer over the past 60 years has made it a trusted material choice in applications with high temperatures and intensely corrosive environments.


Viton® fluoroelastomer's properties allow it to tolerate high temperatures than most other elastomers without reducing its other outstanding mechanical properties. Viton® fluoroelastomer's resistance to oils and chemicals is unphased by high temperatures. Viton's service limits in high temperatures can be monitored using the following parameters:

What Makes Viton® Fluoroelastomer such an outstanding gasket material?


1) Viton® has the ability to resist degradation against much more fluids and chemicals than the opposing non-fluorinated elastomers. Viton® has extraordinary resistance to oils, fuels, lubricants, and most mineral acids.

2) Viton® has remarkably low permeability to numerous substances, and performs especially well with oxygenated automotive fuels.

3) Tolerates aliphatic, aromatic hydrocarbons that other rubbers would fail and dissolve with.

4) Excellent compression set resistance, regardless of high temperatures.

5) Viton's resistance to atmospheric oxidation, sun, and weather is superb. As well as tremendous resistance to fungus and mold.

6) Viton's properties allow for great performance in low voltage, low frequency applications.

7) This material is far more resistant to burning than fluorinated hydrocarbon rubbers due to its low burning characteristics.


Viton® Fluoroelastomer Gasket Material (FKM)

Viton® fluoroelastomer is an excellent choice for gasket cutting, flat seals, door seals, and industrial applications. Standard Viton® gaskets are available in stock or custom manufactured to meet your specifications. Viton® is a revolutionized elastomer that is formulated to withstand extreme heat, oil, and chemicals.


There are several types of Viton® fluoroelastomer, so it is important you understand the parameters of your application to ensure you use the best version to have the most optimal results.


Properly Specify the Grade You Need:

In industries that use gaskets and seals, it is known that specifications that are insufficient, inaccurate or permit substitutions allow for the opportunity to experience quality and performance problems. DuPont's Viton® fluoroelastomer is the most specified fluoroelastomer in the world, therefore providing accurate specifications allows this material to maximize performance of your products.


Viton® is often the name used to refer to all FKM products across the industry, which is a mistake. By misnaming this you may end up with the wrong material. If using the wrong product, you may experience poor performance in your application; therefore it is important you make this distinction.


What is FKM?

FKM is the designation for about 80% of fluoroelastomers as defined in ASTM D1418. Other fluorinated elastomers are perfluoro-elastomers and tetrafluoro ethylene/propylene rubbers. All FKMs contain vinylidene fluoride as a monomer.


Types of Viton® Fluoroelastomers?

Viton® provides excellent resistance to several different fluids, such as mineral acids, and aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. As the fluorine content of the polymer increases, the effect is decreased, as measured by volume for example.


The standard types of Viton® fluoroelastomer products are categorized as A, B, or F, in regard to their relative resistance to attacks from fluids and chemicals. The contrast of fluid resistance between the types of Viton® is due to the different levels of fluorine in the polymer. The difference in fluorine levels within the polymer is determined by the types and relative amounts of copolymerized monomers that comprise the polymers. In regard to resistance to volume change or retention to physical properties, the key differences between Viton® A, B or F are shown in low molecular, oxygenated solvents.

Nitro Containing Compounds

Viton® Products Are Generally Not Serviceable Below -15°F.
