Non-Asbestos Gaskets

Non-Asbestos Gasket

Non-Asbestos Gaskets – The removal of asbestos from the manufacturing material makes these sheets ideal for steam, oil and water sealing. We cut Non Asbestos Gaskets from all the major manufacturers materials including, Garlock, Klinger, Armstrong, Tedit, FMI, Johns Manville, Dx Seal, RM, etc.

Non-Asbestos Material

The essential difference between asbestos and non-asbestos material is that the former contains asbestos, which served as a reinforcing fiber whilst non-asbestos gaskets do not. As a result of serving as a reinforcing fiber, asbestos has a reputation for being strong and having tremendous resistance to chemicals and heat. These properties make asbestos the ideal gasket fiber, unfortunately they also make it a dangerous substance to work with. In the 1980's asbestos became a nasty word as it was now linked to causing cancer. When asbestos became outlawed, a replacement was needed for this useful, yet harmful material. This is when the industry was introduced to these asbestos-free, or non-asbestos materials that were developed to perform the same as regular asbestos, just without the presence of danger to human health.

Now, the majority of gasket manufacturers offer non-asbestos reinforcing fibers in the production of gaskets that perform as good as, if not better than the former asbestos gaskets. The safe materials we use today are composed of aramid fiber (Kevlar) and non-organic fibers. Kevlar is known for being approximately 2 to 9 times more durable than asbestos. These fibers then create a unique blend with different polymers to meet the needs of varieties of applications: most commonly nitrile rubber for fuel and oil resistance.

Additionally, it isn't uncommon for these materials to be graphite coated for non-stick and steam resistance, mixed with PTFE for tremendous chemical resistance abilities, or with EPDM for portable water applications.

Non-Asbestos Materials are often used in the following applications:

    Oil & Gas
    Chemical Processing
    Petrochemical Industry
    Process Industry

Today's major manufacturers include: Garlock, Gasket Resources Inc., and Thermoseal (previously Klinger USA). The majority of manufacturers are now producing off shore. Garlock produces sheet in Mexico and the USA for North American consumption. Gasket Resources Inc. produces in Canada, Thermoseal produces domestically in Ohio (USA) and Internationally. Sourcing of course is a dynamic situation and subject to change.

No matter who the manufacturer is, the basics are the filler and the elastomer used. There are no two compounds (or the % of filler) that are identical, having said that, the basic elastomers are: NBR (Buna-N), SBR, EPDM, or Neoprene. If you examine which material you need (as specified by the application) and choose the non-asbestos gasket material with that elastomer you will have good results. Through the use of this method, you are now able to choose a competitive brand that will assist your application.

REMINDER: Exercise caution because no two materials are identical.

In general, the typical "Binders" are: NBR, SBR, Neoprene, and EPDM.

To simplify things, each material listed will indicate the "binder", despite who the manufacturer is. This provides ease when cross-referencing equivalent materials. It is important to also pay attention to Tensile Strength (for pressure resistance), Temperature Ratings, and Compression/Recovery Ratings.

For optimal performance, also consider: Size, temperature, application, media, pressure, speed (if dynamic) of your specific application.

For finished gaskets consider: Bolt loads, the size of bolts, the number of bolts, the bolt material and available torque.

GSG Non-Asbestos:

GSG Non-Asbestos is a general service gasket material. It is a compressed non-asbestos gasket sheet that is green in color. GSG's material of construction consists of aramid fibers, mineral fibers, and inorganic fibers, all binded with a nitrile binder.

GSG Specifications:

    Maximum Service Pressure: 1422 PSI
    Maximum Service Temperature: 600°F
Recommended Maximum Continuous Service Temperature: 400°F

What is GSG Typically Used For?

GSG is a general use gasket with a wide range of applications.

Due to its superior sealing properties, GSG is typically recommended for oils, fuels, and for applications in gas distribution.

Additionally, the most common cross-referenced to our GSG product is ThermoSeal's product #4401.
